I remember walking back into the dance studio for the first time in 20 years and feeling everything from excitement to nervousness. I was 40 at the time and felt like I was in the best shape of my life. I worked out and ate healthy and did all the things I thought I was supposed to do.
After a few years of being back into dance, I started to notice shifts taking place between my energy and motivation. It started to feel unpredictable at times. I would find advice that was too generic or confusing and not addressing what I was dealing with. Nothing for a woman in her 40s who was already active.
What I was doing vs. what I actually needed
At the time, I was following fairly standard advice: keep calories moderate, eat plenty of vegetables, limit processed foods. Sound guidance, in theory. But it was completely disconnected from the energy my body was actually expending.
I was underfueling and didn't know it.
Here's what no one had told me: active women — especially women in their 40s, whose hormonal landscape is shifting in ways that affect metabolism, recovery, and energy regulation — have specific nutritional needs that generic advice doesn't address. I wasn't eating too much. I was eating too little of the right things, at the wrong times, without any understanding of what my body was actually asking for.
I needed more protein than I was getting. I needed carbohydrates — not fewer of them — to fuel the work I was doing and support recovery. And I needed to understand my actual energy expenditure so I could match my intake to it, not to some estimate I found online.
The shift
I decided to take matters into my own hands and explore nutrition on my own. That's when I came across the Sports Nutrition Program at NASM and decided I should go for it and get certified.
What I found in the research changed how I understood my body completely. Macronutrients aren't the enemy. Eating more isn't the problem. The problem was that I had been following advice designed for a body that wasn't mine, doing work that my nutrition plan wasn't supporting.
Once I started fueling intentionally — matching my intake to my actual energy needs, front-loading carbohydrates around my activity, prioritizing protein for recovery — everything changed. My energy stabilized. My recovery improved. And I stopped feeling like I was fighting my own body every afternoon.
I'm 47. Still dancing. Still going. This shift made it possible.
So, what does this mean for you?
If you're in your 40s and you're active — or you're trying to become more active — and something feels off despite your best efforts, it might not be what you're eating. It might be how you're eating in relation to what your body is actually doing.
Generic nutrition advice is built for a generic body. Your body is not generic. It has a specific metabolism, a specific activity level, specific hormonal patterns, and specific energy demands. You deserve nutrition guidance that actually accounts for all of that.
That's exactly what the Go Thrive Method™ Jumpstart Program is designed to give you. It walks you through a real self-assessment, 7 days of honest tracking, macro education, and your personal BMR and TDEE calculation — so you stop guessing and start fueling for the life you're actually living.
